Update: Path Now Lets Users Opt-out of Sharing Contacts

Path, a popular social networking app available for iOS and Android devices has released an update which allows users to opt-out of sharing contacts. Original controversy was that Path uploads user’s entire address book to their servers without them knowing. Few days back bloggers and news websites bombarded against the issue and rightly so.

Path co-founder and CEO Dave Morin apologized for his company’s not-fully-transparent method to acquire new users. Is that enough to end all that controversy, well we have to wait and see?

iPhone app Path uploads iOS Contacts to its Servers

Path is a popular social networking app available for iOS and Android devices. It is reported that user’s entire Contact/Address Book information is uploaded to their servers and that is causing a bit of a controversy in the media about manipulating user data without their knowledge.

Co-founder and CEO Dave Morin told TechCrunch that it is working to be more transparent in terms of how the company harnesses user-driven data.

“This is currently the industry best practice and the App Store guidelines do not specifically discuss contact information,” Morin said. “However, as mentioned, we believe users need further transparency on how this works, so we’ve been proactively addressing this.”

With ever growing press against the app it is likely that we see changes in Path in the near future.

Tip of the Day: How to Setup iMessage to Receive Messages Across all iOS Devices

iMessage is Apple’s messaging service which works over wi-fi or 3G. Using iMessage you can send messages to people using iPad or iPod. If you own more than one iOS device and you want the ability to use any device to reply to your iMessages then your Apple ID needs to be set up on all devices.

iPhone is Five Years Old

It has been five years today when Steve Jobs first introduced iPhone. Since then Apple has released five models of the iPhone and with the equal pace the iOS (operating system) which is heart at the device.

2007 – iPhone: First iPhone was released in June 29, 2007 in United States. People were reported to queue outside Apple and AT&T retail stores days before the device’s launch. In his address, Jobs said, “I have been looking forward to this for two and a half years”, and that “today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.” First iPhone didn’t have things like 3G, GPRS or front facing camera.

2008 – iPhone 3G: Introduced on June 9, 2008 at the WWDC 2008 at the Moscone Center, San Francisco. 3G iPhone was a redesigned model with the ability to use 3G cellular network data. Most of the iPhone 3G’s internal hardware were based on the original iPhone. It still included a Samsung 32-bit RISC ARM11 620 MHz processor (underclocked to 412 MHz), a PowerVR MBX Lite 3D GPU, and 128 MB of eDRAM.
